What is endoscopic surgery?
Endoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a flexible tube with a camera. The endoscope is inserted through the patient's own natural body openings to diagnose and treat disease. The endoscope projects images from inside the body onto a screen where the surgeon can view them and perform the surgical maneuvers necessary to complete the procedure without the need to make incisions in the patient.
What happens during minimally invasive surgery?
The endoscope and surgical tools will be inserted through openings such as the mouth or anus. With the knowledge of the images displayed by the endoscope, Dr. Bello will perform your surgery - no skin incisions will be made!
What should I expect on the day of surgery?
Each procedure and individual patient is different. Expectations for surgery will be outlined during consultations with Dr. Bello. Generally speaking, endoscopic surgery patients can expect to be discharged without staying overnight; they can go home with the help of friends or family. The procedures are performed under general anesthesia and should take two to three hours. The patient will wake up in our recovery room where they will be monitored before being discharged with friends or family.
How long should I stay in the hospital?
One of the benefits our patients get from minimally invasive surgeries, as opposed to open surgeries, is the shorter time needed for recovery. Most of our patients will be released to friends or family the same day of their surgery. An overnight stay will only be required for more intense surgeries or for patients who require more monitoring.
What are the advantages of endoscopic surgery?
Our patients experience many benefits by choosing minimally invasive surgery over open surgery. One of which is a less painful postoperative experience. The incisions made in the patient's body for surgery are smaller, which means there is a reduced healing time for minimally invasive surgery. With smaller incisions, the body heals faster and leaves much less scarring.
