The surgical team at Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery (MIB) specializes in parathyroid surgery. This procedure removes part or all of the parathyroid gland and is used in cases of high calcium, abnormal growth or cancer.
The parathyroid glands are four small glands located in the neck at the back of the thyroid. These glands produce PTH (parathyroid hormone) which controls calcium levels in the body.
A parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands. Surgery is the only proven solution for treating an enlarged parathyroid. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves a large incision in the upper front of the neck for open surgery. Three to five 2-3 centimeter incisions are used in the lower neck during the minimally invasive technique.
What requires a parathyroidectomy?
There are many conditions that may require the patient to undergo a parathyroidectomy. The three most common problems are hyperparathyroidism (inflammation of the parathyroids), cancer and other abnormal growths. Possible symptoms of parathyroid disease include:
What can I expect from my parathyroidectomy?
Each parathyroidectomy is different and requires specific preparatory steps based on the individual patient. Dr. Bello and the MIB team will sit down with each patient to discuss the details of their specific procedure. In general, most patients spend only one night in the hospital or are discharged the day of surgery. The timing of the patient's discharge depends on their condition at that time.
After the procedure, patients can resume their usual activities as much as they can tolerate. Walking outdoors, going up and down stairs and light activities are encouraged. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting are discouraged.
Abel Bello, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including surgeries using the da Vinci® surgical system.
